toronto vinyl club by norma_jeanein vinyl

stella regularly has vinyl nights where people bring in their records to play and used to have a vinyl marketplace once a month.

I DJ mostly vinyl and have a nice collection of disco, funk, soul and old school hip-hop. Might be interested.

I bought it for five dollars if I remember correctly.

Yup - it's a bootleg. I went to a record store in town (Toronto) that has a lot of rare 7". The guy told me it was a bootleg and that he used to see it once in a while at his store in Portland back in the 90's. It has been out of print for a while... He gave it a value of around 20 bucks.

back - Bought this a few years ago at a small record shop in New Brunswick. I have been trying to find info on it for a while. I can only find a little info on Discogs. Does anybody know if it is rare? How much (if anything) it is worth?

I haven't been in a while. I really wanted to go to the Unspace rooftop party a few weeks back, just been too busy. Maybe I'll go to one soon.

hahaha! I swear my buddies and I thought of this idea a few years back when foursquare was starting up. wheretheladies.at came close to our idea but we couldn't figure out how to get real time stats or to prevent people and bar owners from gaming the system. Facial recognition cameras eh?? Smart.

Anyways, I am from Toronto, and we have a monthly rails meetup hosted by the guys at unspace. It is a great place to meet rails guys, maybe try to find something similar in Chicago? You could always try to poach guys from Groupon :) they are a huge rails shop. The dudes at 37signals might be able to help you out too... Pretty big rails community in Chi-town.

I am a fan of the Timex Modern Originals Grande Classics. I just purchased the black one and it goes with pretty much everything.

That car is in a different intersection than OP. That one looks like it is at Bay and King, whereas OP is on Queen St. close to Spadina.

Need some help from toronto DJ's :( by Mike8277in DJs

I am not a producer by any means, but my buddy runs a DJ school in town and they just started up a producer program.

I took some lessons from this place back in the day (for scratching) and loved it. If you have the cash, I say it's worth it. If you don't want to throw down for a whole course, email Erik (the guy who runs the school) and ask if you can stop by for a crash course over the weekend. He is pretty flexible like that.

Good luck!

I dj a fair bit, and go out a fair bit, and I don't understand what's happening to djs. If I hear a song I don't know, that gets me dancing, that's cool, but when I hear song, after song, after song that I don't know, that does nothing for me. by Sagerianin DJs

Golden rule: Get the ladies dancing, and the dudes will follow. It is all about reading the crowd. People react positively to what the recognize. Mix in a little Lauryn Hill or Michael Jackson in once in while (who wouldn't anyways?) and you have the crowd in the palm your hands. That gives you the license to drop something different that they might have not heard before. You have to build up that trust.

I think party rocking is the hardest type of DJing. Here is a perfect example of A-trak rocking a party with a good mix of classics.

Trying to "educate" the crowd? Please. Give your them a little more credit.

I'm sure house/trance/dubstep/electro/whatever is a totally different beast though.

Has anyone ever bought a used record, to only come home and find something completely different inside? by d-scanin vinyl

The closest I got to this was when I bought Champion Sound by Jaylib for the song The Red and found out that they re-released the record because they got sued over that amazing sample. It was a completely different song.

I started out at Everyone's a DJ at Disgraceland and still throw down once in a while. You only get 20 minutes, but the place is usually full of a good mix of people. Matt, the guy who runs it is a solid guy as well. It is really good practice for a live experience. Make those 20 minutes count!
