I didn't interpret it that way. I think the journalist was fair in his reporting. He was just stating that the movie probably usually would have received an R rating, so don't assume that it's not scary just because it's rated PG-13.

I think he was spot-on in blaming the individual parents for staying through the movie. He didn't blame MPAA or Spielberg, he blamed the parents of the scared children, which is where the blame correctly lies.

I guess I'll be the only one on reddit to say that I enjoyed it in 3D.

The action scenes were really cool in 3D. I really liked when the dirt hit the "camera" in a few of the shots - that effect was really cool in 3D. I also never get headaches when watching in 3D, so that helps. Overall, I'm glad I saw in the 3D, and would happily pay a little extra to see it that way again.

Do you have any more details on the specifics of the exploit they used? I feel like this would be a pretty big issue for Tor if it were true.

From wikipedia:

Additionally, applications using SOCKS5 – which supports name-based proxy requests – can route DNS requests through Tor, having lookups performed at the exit node and thus receiving the same anonymity as other Tor traffic

So, as long as you're browsing from a good application (like the tor browser bundle), you should be safe from this avenue of attack.

html5, around the 52m30s mark there's talk of tunneling websockets using tls over http by throwawayaginin crypto

[–]timepad 0 points1 point ago

Oh sure, you could do sockets in 1995 - but you couldn't do it in a sandboxed environment that is accessible to all of the computing population. Web development isn't about doing new things - it's about doing existing things better, and in a way that is more accessible to the whole world, and easier to develop for.

The owners of this website decided to self-censor because they were afraid of the "legal quagmire" they'd get in if they didn't. In this event, the government had a chilling effect on free speech, that much is certain.

Our freedom of speech is in danger.

First they came for the lolicons, but I did not care, for I was not a lolicon.

Then they came for the flag-burners, but I did not care, for I was patriotic.

Then they came for the copywrite sharers, but I did not care, for I did not share copywritten material.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to defend me.

Seriously, get your fucking head out of your ass. This has happened before, and it will happen again if you keep that type of attitude. The internet is a precious place - it's worth preserving.

Think about it though - what is the party that is causing the risk? It's the government. Whether the gov't directly shut down reddit, or whether reddit decided to censor itself due to fear of being shut down doesn't matter. Ultimately the gov't is effecting censorship.

The government is impinging on freedom of speech here. They specifically called out the "legal quagmire" that they were scared of getting into.

Think about the implications of this if something like SOPA were ever to pass. Reddit has demonstrated that it is scared of the government, and they'll do whatever it asks of them. A damn shame.

The existence of borderline child pornography on Reddit made every user on the site associated with it.

Does the existence of offensive content on the internet associate every user of the internet with it?

Complete bullshit. Drawings of underage girls are banned? Grow some fucking balls reddit.

[–]timepad 32 points33 points ago

This absolutely is a question of free speech. When a private entity feels the need to ban certain types of speech due the the "legal quagmire" that is may put itself into if it allowed such speech - that is an assault on freedom of speech.

I think most Americans would also believe the pictures of burning American flags are also pretty offensive. Should we ban those while we're at it?

Bullshite. I'll take freedom of speech over tact and dignity any day. This is a sad day for freedom of speech.

As Voltaire once may have said said "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I will continue to fight for the free flow of information by supporting and working on technologies that enable it.

This is a semi-interactive flash movie made by Zone. It's called Wakfu. It's semi-interactive because all you can do is go back and forth between scenes, and the scenes loop indefinitely. You can download the whole thing here: http://depositfiles.com/files/ofe6yg9ve

Union Square Ventures Almost Invested in Bitcoin by bilotracein Bitcoin

Well, what we do need investments in are bitcoin-based businesses. We need people to have a reason to trade bitcoins, and innovative businesses that use bitcoins at their core will give more people a reason to trade them.

You're being downvoted because people are scared of change.

The fact of the matter is though, bitcoin is the only truly free money (free as in liberty). For that reason its success is inevitable. People will downvote you now because they're scared of the implications, but they can't stop the wave of inevitably that is coming.
