TROPHY CASE

ITA self-portrait at midnight on my birthday. (Today) by bjoletin itookapicture

Happy Birthday!

Would you mind explaining your camera set-up and post-processing. Looks like you used a fairly wide angle lens with a single light source in front and from below!?

Best sushi in San Diego? by Scope77in sandiego

[–]sunkid 0 points1 point ago

Nobu in Solana Beach is my favorite. The fish quality is on par with Sushi Ota, the prices are maybe slightly lower, but the atmosphere at the sushi bar is a bit more friendly and welcoming, methinks. Then again, I have been going there for 20 years and although I am not a real "regular" both Nobu-san and Yagi-san (senior sushi chef) know me.

Btw - if you ever want to try a very authentic izakaya, check out Yu Me Ya in Leucadia. I think they also have a new place in Hillcrest, but I have not been there.

How was this shot taken? by jdelatorin photoit

It looks to me as if they selectively blurred part of the image with an oval mask. The top of his hair seems in focus, while part of his beard is not, although it looks to be in the same plane.

Black Forest, Germany. by DumbKeyboardin pics

[–]sunkid 0 points1 point ago

Over the past few years, this has changed to some small extent in the Black Forest. I think the big break came with a strong storm system some 25 years ago when many areas were just flattened; Literally, thousands of trees were toppled. I believe this is because trees of uniform height tend to pose much less resistance to strong winds. The "urwald" used to be a mixed forest of beeches, pines, and other trees. For the last couple of thousand years, it has been almost exclusively fast-growing fir. By themselves, firs are also much more vulnerable to wind because they have a fairly flat root system.

I used to give tours at the San Diego Supercomputer Center when they sported one of these beauties. They were the shit then!

645 PRO is available for the iPhone: "the first and only iPhone camera app to give you 'developed RAW' TIFF files" by thedudeisnicein photography

[–]sunkid 1 point2 points ago

I partially agree with you although the explanation at the bottom of the link is fairly straight forward:

The term "developed RAW"—dRAW—is used to describe a TIFF image that has has had no in-app post-processing applied and, critically, no JPEG compression at any stage.

Look, it's really not that hard. For example, common sense tells me that I am wasting my time since you clearly are not willing to meet your own demands (you know, that whole "with actual words and logic and such, rather than just pronouncing it from on high and expecting anyone else to give a crap" part).

As for your "guilt-by-accusation" interpretation of my mentioning of Glen Beck, try again because you failed. And Jesus had nothing to do with it either.

You seriously are trying to convince me that my argument was your misunderstanding of it rather than what I have been trying to explain to you it was? Stop wasting my time, please.

Yours is the only post I have ever seen to sport more than 50 net downvotes and no comment with any net positive vote count as far as I can tell. Congratulations!

Pictures of kids at the beach have been held to be "child porn", but I can't see how such pictures caused any harm.

Give me a break. Yet another red herring?

When I meant child pornography I meant the depiction of children in sexual poses. Naked. Genitalia exposed. Possibly penetrated or aroused.

Your point seems to be that since some people misuse the label no child pornography is harmful to children.

Doesn't stop us from giving them inoculations, or choosing their mode of schooling.

For good reason. Do you have arguments against either? Find someone who is interested because you clearly missed the point.

Also, read up on your fallacies. Straw man clearly does not mean what you think it means. By the way, according to your logic, I do not have to substantiate that but it is your turn to prove me wrong now.

Your subsequent two paragraphs are quite interesting if one manages to overlook the vitriol you so desperately cling to in order to make your points (however beside the point they may be).

That said, I want to make sure I understand this one fully: You seem to say that because "we cannot agree on a definition of child pornography", we should not disallow obvious cases of it? I guess we would simply have to "agree to disagree" on that one if that is truly what you meant.

The reason between common sense and "common sense" is that one exists and the other is merely used as an argument. Shouldn't really be so hard to understand. But I'll let it slide since you got your little head full of all that other crap you're spewing about my personal knowledge and the apparent conviction that given your initial accusation of having little I now need to follow that up with proving you wrong. Glen Beck would be proud!

Let me try and make it simple for you. CoronelBuendia's original comment was

And what if a society's perceived morality is completely backwards, bringing mass suffering and little to no well-being? Mob think should not stand in for true morality that stands to reason.

It has two parts. I responded primarily to the second one, because it pertained to what I had originally responded to, i.e. sketerpot's statement:

Freedom of speech is a good thing. Common sense, tact and dignity is even better.

Fuck everything about this. I'm hard-pressed to think of any censorship campaign that didn't consider itself to be championing common sense, tact, and dignity. Free speech is important, damn it, and I have only contempt for your cavalier attitude toward chucking it out when it disgusts you.

My main argument was "freedom of speech is a very high moral principle but it may be trumped by other ethical values." You surely understand that this is a purely theoretical argument (ok, I am going on a limb with that one, but let's just assume for argument's sake that you are capable of that level of comprehension). Well, then, the argument I am willing to have is whether or not that is true: Is freedom of speech the highest ethical law or not.

If you want to argue about anything else, go find someone else to do it with. I am not interested. And I am certainly not interested to discuss with you the more complex question of whose morals are the superior given your penchant for using rhetoric and insults.

You need factual arguments that child pornography is harmful to children? Seriously? I would think that the lack of any real capacity to give informed consent should be enough of an argument. Otherwise, we might as well tattoo them as we see fit, or do whatever else we please with them that doesn't leave them with physical wounds. Is that what you are proposing?

As for your historical diatribe, you do realize that you could write much the same about how black people or gay people used to be (and often still are) treated. As you pointed out elsewhere yourself, that don't make it right. So why use that argument now?
