Alright Reddit! What are some of the biggest movie plot holes that you know of? by DrToonzin AskReddit

I haven't clicked on a fanfiction.net link since I was 13 years old... having flashbacks to a dark and nerdy time.

5 things you should know about Orthodox Jewish women by misanthropegirlin TwoXChromosomes

[–]slizzardtime 14 points15 points ago

I think the authors point about the hasidic women not being forced against their will to live there is valid, but the community is also not the happy-go-lucky, super tolerant and open place she makes it out to be either.

I don't have that much insight into the subject but what little I do comes from being a lapsed Jew myself and living a 10 minute walk from the large Hasidic community in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As much as the author is trying to make it seem like Hasidic women are just 'normal gals' who love sex and guys (as long as its their husband, mind you) the truth is they still live in a very closed-off and archaic society where all girls get married young and have a lot of children. All of them. There's nothing inherently wrong with that of course, but it's simply not the liberal way of life the author is describing.

Yeah, it is a 'choice,' like I said, they're not oppressed to the level of women in a lot of conservative religious societies. But it's also not completely the open and supportive society the article makes it out to be either. For example, the author could certainly wear disco pants and try drugs, but she would also become an outcast in the community and probably lose her husband and kids.

This is a good article, especially in response to some of the recent, extreme decriers of women in the Hasidic Jewish community. However, there is a great comment underneath the article that really spoke to me. It basically said that while Hasidic Jewish women aren't oppressed necessarily, they still live in an extremely structured, heteronormative society with rigidly defined gender roles.

Yeah I thought human eggs were supposed to be teeny tiny, like the size of a period in 12 pt font or something.

What are the safest drugstore dye brands? by Underwoodfivein FancyFollicles

[–]slizzardtime 0 points1 point ago

If you have a sally's beauty supply near you or don't mind ordering it off their website, clairol makes this product called radiance colorgloss. It's a semi-permanent deposit-only color treatment, you buy the color and the developer and it ends up being around $10 and is fairly foolproof to mix up and apply. I used it for years to keep my ends matching my dark brown roots when they would lighten from the sun. It makes your hair really shiny and healthy looking too, and eventually fades really subtly without roots.

Thanks for the neutrogena rec I'll check it out.

And I read in rare cases the aphogee stuff can really mess with your hair if you don't follow directions correctly or dry it totally or something. I'll just have to be careful I guess.

Thanks for all of your advice! I will definitely use the 10 vol for the toner and only process 45 minutes at the most. And condition a lot. Are there any conditioners that you would recommend in particular? I heard about this protein treatment thing called aphogee and was considering trying it a week or so post-bleach.

What is something that society finds repulsive/taboo/etc. that you see no problem with? (Possibly NSFW) by ruckus666in AskReddit

Breasts are sexual though. They're an erogenous zone on most women. Some women can even orgasm from only breast stimulation. It's certainly not as clear cut of a distinction as you're making it seem.

Thanks so much for your advice, especially the bit about the developer concentrations and times. My hair is healthy now by definition, since I don't use heat on it or color it. But I'm not too worried about bleaching short hair and weakening it, because hey, it's already short. I don't think I'd ever have long blonde hair.

I'm waiting for my bangs to grow out a bit before I do the pixie, and then I'll try to post updates. And who knows, I might change my mind and go to a salon after all.

How have birth control pills changed you? by thesnowflakein TwoXChromosomes

[–]slizzardtime 1 point2 points ago

You can always have them removed if there are problems. I think the cost and pain are oftentimes a deterrent for removal though. Personally, I bled more for a couple of months after my insertion but a year later things were completely back to normal.

I will whole heartedly second this. IUDs are awesome and incredibly simple. I got a copper one and it has no side effects and it lasts for 12 years and requires NO maintenance while being super effective. I was on hormonal birth control pills once and they were much more time consuming and harder to use and much more prone to failure --AND they totally killed my sex drive so I never wanted to have sex, ever.

The only downside to IUDs that I've seen is they can be expensive. Luckily my insurance covered mine and it was completely free (free super effective reversible birth control for 12 years!) Alternately there are programs to subsidize the cost if your insurance won't cover it.

Can anyone give me advice on proper gifting etiquette and a Japanese roommate? by slizzardtimein japan

[–]slizzardtime[S] 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm, well I think he's lived in the US for over ten years and has American and international friends, so I'm not sure how much culture I could really show him, but I will definitely consider this. Maybe we could go out to a nice bar in our neighborhood or something... though I'm not sure if he drinks.

Hmmm, I don't really know too much about what he is interested in but I'll try to find out. Thank you for your advice.

Thank you for your advice, I am going out of town for a bit in early April and I will try to get him something cool and regional specific then.

I like the idea of just leaving a nice gift by his door, as I can be super shy and awkward myself. Is a small potted plant or flower an acceptable gift like flower arrangements are?

Thank you for your thoughtful response! I was afraid of something like this infinite gift-giving spiral existing! This is what happened when I gave him cookies.

I feel like the clothing really isn't a big deal for him as he really does have a lot of clothing laying about. He used to work quite closely for a womenswear designer and all of the stuff he has given me (while extremely lovely) was from collections several years past that never sold or whatnot. But it's still super nice, again. I wish there was a comperable product from my workplace but sadly no.

I am a very quiet roommate who is rarely home, so I intend to keep that up. I am also going to try to cook him some unique food from my region of the US.

If I did it the American way I think I would get him a really nice thank you card and continue to do nice things like offer him baked goods when I do make them. Do you think this is an appropriate response?

I will try and cook a big meal for my apartment sometime soon when I have time off. It's so hard to schedule things where we both have free time however. Maybe I could just make a plate for him and leave it in the fridge :/

Edit: also you said don't make a big deal of saying that it is a return gift specifically?
