Court won't reduce student's music download fine ($675 000 for sharing 30 songs) by knowshunin rpac

[–]omgitsjo 0 points1 point ago

Quite true, though the median household income in the United States is $21.74 per hour. I'm thinking 15% loss after local and federal taxes leaves you with about $18. If you give just about half of your paycheck, that gets things down to $9. Repayment in around 40 years.

This assumes he gives 100% of his income to the RIAA before taxes.

It may sound insignificant, but I just paid off my credit card, my car and my student loan and now don't owe any bank a single dollar. What are your achievements you'd like to share? by thatguyintheskyin AskReddit

[–]omgitsjo 0 points1 point ago

I'm leaving my six figure job in San Diego to go to graduate school. It sounds like a really stupid move, considering I still have student loans and a car to pay off, but I was rejected ten times from seven different schools. It means longer hours, less pay, more stress, but it's something I've wanted to do for a very long time.

Accepting an engineering position at my company is something I consider one of the bigger mistakes of my life, and now it's time to rectify that mistake.

Ah, I see. Hadn't thought of that. Thank you.

Tangentially related question:

I'm aware that greedy algorithms for teh change-making problem is sub-optimal (and sometimes actually incorrect) for currencies.

For what currencies and values is the answer incorrect?

I'm not even talking about price, just the technical feasibility of having that resolution. Ten angstroms is about the size of five gold atoms next to one another. Given an eight cubic foot area, let's assume you've got a workspace of 2ft by 2ft by 4ft. The maximum distance from the center of the transmitter to the edge is then sqrt(22 + 22 + 22) [note that I'm assuming the transmitter is at 0, 0, 2. Ten angstroms, or 1.0e-9 at a distance of 1.055858171m (that's the distance from device to edge of visible volume in meters) would be like shooting a bullet from San Diego to New York (3914000m) and hitting the diamond in a playing card. Consistently. Several times per second.

Surprisingly, people perceive things to taste better based solely on outside aesthetic. As long as the inside is above average, they can be bumped into the realm of exceptional by a well planned exterior.

I want to be able to give my computer the finger and have it close the currently running application.

Edit: As genneth pointed out, its ten microns, not ten angstroms. My numbers are off by six or seven orders of magnitude.

Jesus fucking Christ. That's a time resolution of 33 femtoseconds. The CCD needs to be clocking at 3.03030303e+13 Hz, or 30 THz (30000 GHz).

Misrepresentation of information. Foxconn removed family compensation for suicide cases. A subtle but very important distinction.

An absolutely outstanding discussion on the evils and benefits offered by Foxconn in China. It's among the best discussions I've seen in all of Reddit.

ELI5: How did Turing prove that most numbers are incalculable? by mcnibbletonin explainlikeimfive

[–]omgitsjo 3 points4 points ago

He's just picking out some numbers as an example. What's important is you can pick any number (let's call it 'n') and say, "I have a system with n bits of memory." If I have n bits of memory, I can represent any number up to a certain size. 2n is the biggest number I can represent, but what's really important is there are an INFINITE number of numbers BIGGER than 2n. Since there are a finite number of numbers I can represent and an infinite number of numbers I can't represent, that means I can not represent most numbers.

Turing mentioned a computer with infinite memory as part of a theory, not necessarily as something to be built. Most of our practical applications do not require infinite memory. If I need to remember four numbers and my computer can store 100000000, then my needs are satisfied! Hooray!

"Before the iPhone launched (and keep in mind that was only five years ago), a whole industry had a very clear picture of what were and what were not the needs of their customers. Needless to say, they were pretty much wrong. Today’s marketshare leader (Android) didn’t even exist then;"

Incorrect. The Android operating system was created in 2003, purchased by Google in 2005, and released to the public in 2007, the same year as the iPhone.

I don't think it was appropriate to attack her as a bigot, though she certainly is. Better to simply attack the viewpoint and state facts. One can't argue with facts.
