TROPHY CASE

This always bugs me. Universal Up. by Jebus812in scifi

[–]exegesis 1 point2 points ago

but, hey, FTL itself violates known physics, and artificial gravity & inertial dampeners are highly suspect, so we're out of the textbooks anyway

We accept those things because they are part of the technological premise of the movie. These things take place, says the film, in a world where faster than light travel is possible with warping engines, which are theoretically possible under known physics. This world also has a form of inertia control, there are engines and machines that accomplish this.

But unless every starfighter has installed some device that replicates airplane dynamics for no practical purpose, the immersion is broken. If it is internally consistent, then it doesn't bug people because it's scifi.

Weekly Challenge: Minmus! by youngjeezyvsgbushin KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]exegesis 0 points1 point ago

Landing on the Min on my first try with stock parts, embarrass myself by trying to landing on the mun as well with a lander not designed for two escapes, failing to achieve orbit around the mun, crashing.

Great job! Try do do it stock, the challenge is not that much bigger, and everyone will know that you didn't use cheaty parts.

My friend just won 50 thirty second ad spots on local radio. What should he do with them? by Wait_____Whatin AskReddit

It's not the people who write it, the comment itself is pedantic because it is repetitious, boring, and falsely superior.

I am really sick of this comment. It adds nothing, it is pedantic and juvenile, it implies that any opinion that is perceived as popular on reddit is karma phishing, and it is as unoriginal as they come.

[–]exegesis 3 points4 points ago

Congrats! Try to do it with stock parts next, its harder, but more satisfying.

You're right, I realized it a little while after I commented that I'd got it backwards.

The point is that a 90deg transfer will cause you to do a gravitational slingshot, which requires a lot of deltaV to counteract, whereas a 270 orbit will have the opposite effect of slowing the spacecraft down relative to the mun.

Using only the information displayed on mechjeb, not the autopilot itself, I successfully deorbited and landed a small stock fuel tank with a small stock engine about 80 meters from the KSC, with no other parts but that, not even a control pod. Just small fuel, engine, mechjeb.

My one lone moment of glory.

I think this works a little better if you do a 270 orbit instead, burning when the moon is setting. I'm not sure though.

Help with Kosmos Mod please. by stand_inin KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]exegesis 2 points3 points ago

The thing with the capsule is a little tricky, but all you have to do is attach it on the lower node: there are two almost superimposed, one for the decoupler, one for the parachute. Just make sure it is in the lower position.

[Question]Need a bit of help with Mun landings. by zander_2in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]exegesis 3 points4 points ago

You know the two yellow things on your navball? One of those is the direction of your momentum, and one is opposite. When descending, you'll want to point your ship at the one where the lines are inside the circle, or, opposite your current direction. (AKA Retrograde) When you're finally landing, you want that indicator to be at the top of your navball, indicating zero horizontal velocity. If it's not, you'll want to aim a few degrees in the horizontal direction of the retrograde indicator, until it moves to the middle. Hope this helps, feel free to respond if it didn't.
