I've heard that citric acid can/will kick you out of ketosis. I'm a fan of diet soda, but I'll only drink one can a day, if at all (unless I go out and have a mixed drink). I'm wondering if what I've heard is true, and if so, how much does it take to kick you out? Any input and advice is welcome! by AkaMisoin keto

[–]cephster 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much this. Diet sodas and sugar alcohols are things which can greatly vary from person to person. Try it out and see, you'll can usually tell just from how you feel after drinking one. Personally, diet soda is fine for me.

I used to get coughing fits (I don't smoke) and splitting headaches occasionally. Both gone since I started keto. Feels good man.

Atkins says to limit the amount of caffeinated tea during induction? Why do this if you don't sweeten it? by Pinyakain keto

[–]cephster 1 point2 points ago

Right, but I think he accepted some studies that found that moderate amounts of caffeine actually stimulated weight loss in some people. Again though, I can't find the source of where I read that... and it's annoying me.

I remember reading somewhere that Atkins changed his stance on coffee at some point (saying it was fine if you keep away from the milk and sugars) but I'm having trouble finding the source.

It's possible she was using low fat cream cheese and liquid splenda, which would roughly account for the differences there.

How important is the macro? by mishmashmishin keto

[–]cephster 1 point2 points ago

Your body will generally follow the path of least resistance and burn the most abundant energy source available to it. So if your protein is too high your might use that instead. Try to stick to the ratios so that your body becomes accustomed to burning fat instead.

Nutritional facts disputes, what do i trust? by maxes21in keto

Usually eggs/bacon/small salad or cream cheese pancakes for breakfast. Sometimes with coffee with heavy cream. For lunch I usually get a grilled chicken salad or some kind of chicken meal. For dinner I go with some kind of homemade meat/cheese dish. Last night was pork chops and sausage. Night before was some homemade keto pizza. I find what I like and go with it :)

I tend to eat the same things, so for me it's as easy as manually entering things in MFP and then checking them off when I go to log my food.

Always trust the packaging. They're required by the FDA to be accurate... literally anyone can add information into MFP.

Q. Does eating 1g of net carbs a day cause you to lose more weight than eating 19g of net carbs a day? by TTCorein keto

[–]cephster 6 points7 points ago

Ketosis is binary, you're either in it or you're not. There's really no difference between 1g of carbs or 20 or 40 as long as you're in ketosis, as far as this diet is concerned.

Yeah. I've told my close friends and family what keto is about and they support me, but for anyone else I just tell them I'm eating better and leave it at that.

I'm beginning to feel that keto should be added to politics and religion on the list of things you shouldn't bother arguing about. Some people won't be convinced after having the same story drilled into their brain since elementary school. It takes an open mind to question things that you've held as fact for so long, and quite frankly most people are stubborn in their beliefs.

Didn't see this asked specifically - Is the point of doing keto/being in ketosis, that you lose weight faster (than a regular diet)? by ketominein keto

[–]cephster 0 points1 point ago

There are plenty of sources in the sidebar if you want to know the science behind it. Like the poster above says, the body processes things differently and there are many advantages to going low carb, insulin production being a big one. Ketosis is the bodily process that let you burn fat as fuel which is why everyone makes a big deal about not falling out of it. You need to keep your glycogen stores low enough (by not eating carbs) so that your liver keeps converting your fat stores into fuel.

Keep in mind I was answering the question about losing weight faster on keto than other diets. In that context, my main point is that no, it's not really faster, but it's easier to maintain consistent weight loss on keto since you stay fuller longer and generally eat less.

Yes, if you can run a caloric deficit eating 200g carbs a day you'd probably have similar results. I think you'd find that you'd be hard pressed to keep full on that while maintaining the same calorie deficit. I don't want to get too much into broscience, but I think the body essentially is more efficient burning fat and that carbs are almost too abundant of an energy source.

I'm down 17 pounds and it's been about 4.5 weeks, so fairly quickly I guess. I never did take measurements but I've definitely gotten smaller around my midsection as well. Needless to say I'm pretty satisfied so far. I'm rarely hungry and feel great.

I'm not sure if that's true. It might be. I think if you have a lot to lose you can expect more consistent weight loss. As you approach a normal weight range, weight loss tends to slow down and plateau more often. I guess it depends on your definition of "faster".

I started tracking everything I ate with MFP from Day 1, it certainly helped a lot. Once I got a feel for keeping my carb count low I started focusing on keeping my calories low. I exercise 6 days a week which seems to help widen the gap a bit. I'm usually around 1300-1500 calories per day which is pretty crazy when I think about how much I used to be eating.

My 2 cents:

I wouldn't say that the point of keto is to lose weight faster, no. It's not a miracle diet. I think the main difference is that keto is healthier for you. Weight watchers doesn't restrict what you can eat, it just assigns a point value to everything and leaves it up to you what to spend your daily allotment on. You can spend all your points on chocolate cake and ice cream if you want to. It's harder to adhere to because you're still always hungry and (usually) still eating sugar-loaded frankenfood.

Keto is more based in science and eating heathier. Yes, you can eat bunless McDonalds burgers every day if you wanted to, but I think the true spirit of keto is eating balanced homemade meals consisting mostly of meats, cheeses, and vegetables. You get your body using fat for fuel, and taking advantage of the fact that fat keeps you satiated longer. You naturally get a caloric deficit and don't feel like you're starving yourself doing it - while also generally eating healthier.

In terms of how fast the weight loss is, I don't think keto is any different, I think it's just easier to follow if you commit to it because you don't feel like you're staving all the time and are thus less inclined to cheat. After the initial water weight loss I think most people lose 1-3 pounds per week, which is about what you can expect on low-fat diets too.

I've had a 70 carb dinner before and my sticks kept showing up even though I'm pretty sure it knocked me out. Varies by person, I'm sure.

I believe it takes about 72 hours. Remember that the sticks measure excess ketones, so if your body starts burning the carbs you'll still have some in your body for awhile. By the time they run out you'll hopefully have switched back to ketosis again.

It's been my experience that your body can occasionally handle a higher carb meal from time to time, but you shouldn't make a habit out of it.
