A few n00b questions regarding Time Machine by gusbustafunkin apple

[–]bp332106 2 points3 points ago

You can access the time machine files from any computer but the disk is formatted for mac. So in other words the Dell would not be able to read the files from the disk directly. A friend's mac would be able to get the files from the TM drive though.

They are called logic boards because they incorporate more peripherals into one board than a typical motherboard would. Originally a motherboard would house the processors, busses and high speed connections. In a MBP or iMac the logic board houses (among other things) the CPU, busses, graphics card, bluetooth, memory, speakers, light sensors, and lower speed connections. If we were talking about a mac pro it would be the back plane board. They don't have that name to be "cute" it's to make an important distinction.

I see where you're going with that and agree it's something to think about. But considering what martylike2rock is trying to accomplish, he is going to get more use out of the transfer rate increases than 2 GB of extra total memory. Keep in mind your computer does not utilize 100% of the RAM you have installed at all times. If you're on a mac right now do this, open activity monitor and see what your amount of used and free RAM is. If it is anything like my computer, with Logic Pro open and running a session, I am using 2.3 of 4 total GB. So lets assume martylike2rock upgrades to 6GB of RAM. When he is running his audio session, it will probably only use between 2GB and 3GB of RAM anyway. So while that extra memory is not being utilized at all, he could have had better read write speeds which would mean faster response when opening and using the audio application

Certified Apple tech here, unless you have the early 2009 model, your computer's logic board is limited to 6 GB (technically) or if you go by what apple says, 4 GB is the max

My 2008 MBP is the same deal where people say it can handle 6 GB but Apple says 4GB. The reason for this is your computer has 2 RAM slots and they don't make 3 GB RAM sticks, so there is no way to get 6 GB of RAM without using an unmatched pair. You will almost certainly want to use a matched pair because the read/write speed gained by doing this is more useful than the additional 2GB of extra RAM with no "ganged pair architecture" This article talks more about using memory in pairs

Any beginning homebrewers curious how good the Midwest Groupon is? Here it is in album form! (Also my first brew) by bp332106in Homebrewing

[–]bp332106[S] 2 points3 points ago*

It's made by Nicety. Kind of a generic brand online. Works quite well though. Most infrared thermometers online are super accurate and have a wide range of temps. For brewing and cooking though, the cheaper ones are accurate enough (within 1 to 5 degrees) and still go to like 700 degrees max. I tested this one with a regular dial thermometer and they were within 1 degree if each other in liquid.

Everything used (except the infrared thermometer) is from Midwest. I had to get the Kettle outside of the Groupon, for an additional $30.

To give you a small example of this, Kapton tape was used in the Apollo missions to keep electronics insulated and reduce electronic failures. This same tape is now used in your laptop to insulate connectors. Without it, laptops would need to have bulkier connectors and thus not be as thin and light as they are now.

Yamha receiver 96 kHz/24-BIT DAC question by arrayedin audiophile

[–]bp332106 1 point2 points ago

For that to work your video card would have to be outputting 96K 24 bit (it may or may not be) and the tv would have to pass through audio. Since you are going from an hdmi cable to toslink, I would bet it is downsampling the audio but you would have to check its specs to see. In other words you receiver definitely can handle 96K 24 bit but every other link in the chain would have to as well and most TV's would probably not handle it.

I'm curious, do you have any modifications that help or just stock? Reason I ask is, I'm also trying to make my Mazda 3 Hatch a travel vehicle, which will inevitably require it to go off road. I was never sure how it would handle that though.
