[FL9] Can I get some feedback on this track? by wiluin FL_Studio

[–]bobby-joe 2 points3 points ago*

I like where this is heading. I can't really get deep into the technical stuff because I'm really not that experienced myself. In general it's sounding great!

As far as criticism goes, ShinichiChiba definitely hit the nail on the head:

...the best way to describe how I am feeling from this track is monotone. There doesn't seem to be enough difference...

First and foremost, throw some more variations in there to liven things up. Second, the EP sample that should be driving the track instead sort of just hangs out in the background. It doesn't really go anywhere new melodically- it's just chopped up here and there throughout the song. I can't really latch onto it.

My advice here would be to introduce some solid, soulful hook action that can soar above the rest of the mix.

Examples: 1 2

In both of these tracks there's enough variation to keep me interested and keep the track moving forward.

In summary, I think you have an excellent base set up here. Now just build on top of it with some new variations and hooks and you'll be set.

(Of course, if that's not what your goal is with your track then disregard this. :P Just giving my 2 cents)

Daniel Day-Lewis in full Lincoln garb by thesummerofgeorgein pics

With Daniel in there it definitely should be amazing. That guy gets into character like no other.

Got this from Cracked

The Boxer: Trained for 18 months with former world champion Barry Mcguigan who later said that Day Lewis could have easily been a professional afterward.

The Crucible: Etched actual tattoos onto his own body, "lived in the film set's replica village without electricity or running water" and built his character's house using 17th-century tools.

Gangs of New York: In preparation for his role as Bill the Butcher, Daniel Day Lewis actually took up an apprenticeship as a butcher; he would sharpen his knives during breaks in filming. He was also diagnosed with pneumonia on set, after continuously refusing to wear warmer modern coats as they 'wouldn't have existed in the 19th century'. Reportedly traipsed about picking fights with strangers during the filming.

My Left Foot: During filming as paralytic Christie Brown, Lewis refused to leave his wheelchair between scenes, so he could truly experience the problems associated with the condition. His constant refusal to break from character also earned him 2 broken ribs, from his continually hunched position in the wheelchair. He somehow sat still so hard that he broke his own ribs, and still didn't move.

Last of the Mohicans: Lived in the wild for 6 months, surviving only on necessities.

In the Name of the Father: For the part of a prisoner, Lewis lived in solitary confinement at an abandoned prison. He slept in an abandoned jail and ate only prison food.

J. Crew Authentic Bayswater Pea coat (in Navy)

Chippewa for J.Crew plain-toe boots

Suggestions on what to use to waterproof the boots?

Thanks a ton for linking to these and the styleforum comments man. I was almost set on those Katahdins, but hot damn those J. Crew Chippewas look good. Worth the extra money as far as I'm concerned.

Help a high school teen pick out a stylish jacket for the winter. by finalflarein malefashionadvice

I bought that last jacket. No problems so far. I like the feel of it actually- it's kinda heavy and the faux leather really isn't bad. I've gotten plenty of compliments on it too. Just throwing in my two cents. (That first jacket looks great as well.)

If you were specifically looking at a peacoat, I know Joe over at Dappered said that he was going to do an in person review of their slim fitting version. That should be up very soon- possibly tomorrow.

First post to FL_Studio! Also my first major attempt at Dubstep. "Darkness" (WIP) by rodentexplosionin FL_Studio

Disclaimer: my knowledge of dubstep is pretty limited. Just trying to give some advice from my perspective.

My key concerns:

1) I felt it took too long to get things moving. I understand you want to build ambiance and all that, but keep it reasonable. No need for a full minute before the beat kicks in.

2) The patterns are very repetitive. Try some more variation on the drums and lead wobble. Also, mess around with a higher range of notes for the lead. I feel it comes off dull. It doesn't do much for me sitting there on the same couple of notes the whole time.

That being said, I think the direction you're heading is pretty cool! Good concept. Keep working at it!

Would Clark's Bushacre 2 boots be appropriate for the Canadian winter? by ZestyCitrusin malefashionadvice

[–]bobby-joe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I happen to own the exact same pair of Bushacres. :)

From what I understand, most people around MFA agree that Desert Boots in general are not suited for winter weather because

A) They're not going to be very warm, and

B) They're not going to provide much traction for you.

I'll also add on that the nubuck on those bushacres isn't going to fair well if you're looking at a snowy situation.

I wouldn't recommend these for winter. If they're your only option, I suppose you can manage, but you'd have to be really careful about where you're walking. I think there should be a reasonably priced winter boot for you out there somewhere- keep looking man!
