I caused my mother to leave my stepdad over a bottle of mouthwash. What effect did you inadvertently have on your parents as a child? by Greggor88in AskReddit

[–]arl2146 29 points30 points ago

When I was about 3 or 4, my mom was out of town and my father took me and my brothers to the local playground/park. At some point I told my dad I had to pee. The nearest not-behind-a-tree option was a house that sat on the corner of the park. Dad walked me over there, knocked on the door, a woman answered and she took me inside to use the bathroom. The tldr of the rest of the story is that our families became "friends" as the woman also had a daughter my age and a son for my brothers to hang with. Dad and woman had affair, left respective spouses for each other, childhood bff became stepsister and a really twisted Brady bunch was formed. I don't blame myself for the mess that the affair caused but I often think I should've just peed behind a tree.

To any poetry fans, where's a good place for someone that's interested in reading and understanding poetry to begin? by bandoliyain AskReddit

[–]arl2146 0 points1 point ago

I like the norton anthologies because you get some of the world's best work, with some of the world's best commentary. but depending on your age, i recommend beginner's level poetry seminars and workshops, perhaps at a local college or arts center. I studied poetry at the Kerouac School of Disembodied poetics for 3 years, then transferred to Columbia U's school of general studies for a degree in Creative Writing. The classes I have taken on poetry have been so valuable... from middle school through college. I feel like having a structured, pseudo-linear exploration of poetry helped me to grow and understand and finally fall madly in love with the art of the written word. Everyone's exploratory path is different. Good luck! There are few things more rewarding than connecting with a new passion.

Is there a way to report this person, as their name and location is provided, as well as the fact that he is a practicing pharmacist? Or is this technically legal? seems like it shouldn't be.

I love all of these ideas! Assuming you have found some sort of idea or character to work with, I am an advocate of the character sketch for the latter, and for the former, pick a part you feel ready to write (ANY point in the story, can be a start, an end, a random side scene) and just go with it. I find that much of what comes from both these practices won't even make it into the final cut, but it's better IMHO to have as much hashed out as possible and cut like a maniac from there. I always liked the iceberg analogy. Good luck!

Writer's Embarrassment? by Leakybubblein writing

[–]arl2146 1 point2 points ago

Oh gosh, I hate when folks read over my shoulder as I write. I, too, find myself quite embarrassed about my novel writing rather than my poetry. I suppose it has to do with the fact that poetry, in a very cheap blanket statement, is not easily 'judge-able' due to its general lack of an easily 'followable' storyline or understandable, clear idea one can catch with a skim-over. On the other hand, novel writing and the like involves (again, generalizing here), concrete concepts most folks understand or have experienced that we, as writers, are all busy trying to make uniquely our own. I care so deeply about my interpretations, but what if that stranger thinks it's 'dumb' or doesn't do the subject justice. Or worse, what if they simply think it's poor writing?! Sometimes I am even embarrassed without the stranger over the shoulder, as I am concerned that what I am writing is so utterly important to me as I sit alone that I might be delusional, and it might be worth shit to someone else. Let me re-iterate that I don't believe poetry OR prose is one particular thing (easy or hard to do, easy or hard to understand, etc)... I fear a backlash if I am misunderstood. I just mean this all in a very generalized way. And truthfully, I have only two ways of personally coping with this embarrassment. A. I keep my font tiny when typing in public, with an extra tab always at the ready to block my work from those wandering eyes who bother to squint past the font size. B. I remind myself that 90% (or some other arbitrary percentage) of the people who do happen to read my work over my shoulder have no experience or interest in creative writing, so to them (I tell myself...) my work is probably pretty impressive, even in a seemingly worthless first draft. I suggest you remind yourself that the mere fact that you make an effort to work on your art makes you worthy of a pat on the back from whomever gets the privilege of reading, or even glancing.

Is reading innately enjoyable if given a chance, or is it a matter of preference? by dice145in books

[–]arl2146 2 points3 points ago*

GREAT question to pose; I think about this about as often as I go through my phases of dis/interest in reading. I truly believe that if given a chance and genuine effort (the search for the right book), everyone who is capable of reading would enjoy it.

What is a time your pet has genuinely surprised you. by scruffy01in AskReddit

[–]arl2146 4 points5 points ago

I rescued a stray kitten out of the trash bin outside my apartment in Brooklyn 3 years ago. She was delighted to have a safe, warm home and food/water on hand. My nightly routine involved leaving out my vitamins, keys, and a dollar bill for bodega coffee on the night stand for the next morning. For a week or two I kept forgetting to put out the dollar. One night I came home from work (bartender) and was counting my tips on the bed. The cat jumped up on the bed and out of the corner of my eye I caught her grab a dollar bill in her teeth and dip under the bed like lightning. When I got down on my hands and knees and shined a light under the bed to see wtf she was doing, I saw all the dollar bills I had 'forgotten' to put out for coffee. The bitch was stockpiling my ones. When i reached in to grab them, she hissed and scratched, so for about a month I came home from work every night and gave her a dollar and she hid it under the bed. Eventually she stopped, but roomie and I will never know wtf that was all about... was she working for someone? did she somehow learn the intrinsic value of a dollar bill? did she stop because she realized she could trust me? Hustlin' Bed Stuy cat..
