TROPHY CASE

Using my bike for different purposes... [1024 x 683] by willashcroftin ExposurePorn

At the moment, I think you are well settled with the 55-200. Granted, you may not be able to snap pictures like this or this, however, it should allow you to experiment with candid-photography and quite a generous helping of macro photography.

Keep practicing - you will get good at it with time.

Lens suggestions - I do not have a DSLR myself, so I won't be able to help much. But, like I said, the 55-200 is a good buy, and the 35mm f/1.8 should be another very good addition that doesn't burn holes in the pockets.

Glad to be of what little help I can :)

Dawww.. an entire month of reddit gold??? Nawww - you needn't have. Still, I appreciate the gesture very much. Thank you.

You recently purchased a new DSLR? Wow - congratulations. Which model did you purchase?

Photography is a "costly" hobby - once you get to lenses and stuff, but gives immense satisfaction once you are able to convey what the eyes can see into digital form for posterity's sake. Something like this or this or this or this or this, or something as simple as this - when you are able to convey to the viewer, the sense of awe you had when you personally saw the pic - that's when you get immense satisfaction. Atleast, that is how it works for me.

And when I am able to share the little information I have (like this explanation of how to actually do the long exposure photography) - that also gives satisfaction - satisfaction that I got interested in a field where I could help others as well :)

I understand that because you are busy with stuff, you may not be able to take photographs using the new DSLR - however, I suggest you keep the DSLR open at all times, and snap pictures every day, even if it is of the silliest things. Capture them each day, and when you are free, review the pics you have taken - you'll find it a very very good learning experience. You could even try reddit's photo-a-day activity to give you inspiration. Just keep clicking - let it be mindless. That's the advantage of going digital - almost zero "running" cost.

Can't wait to see pics from you :) Take care, and be well.

Best time for such photography is late evening since you're going to keep camera's shutter open for more than 1 second, so even dark skies will be lit up.

Essential ingredients:

Camera capable of atleast aperture priority - full manual is preferred, tripod

Bicycle, steel-wool, battery (get the ones that have both positive and negative terminals on top)

I've read that if you get steel wool of a low guage as possible, the embers are cleaner. Ensure you have a little prior experience lighting the steel wool - it is fairly easy.. Just stick the battery's terminals into the steel wool and it should start "embering" - don't forget to remove the battery once the embering starts. You'll be able to judge how much time you have after you light the steel wool, and plan accordingly for the process outlined below.

Fun fact - the steel wool starts embering because the various coils in the steel wool are short-circuiting due to contact with the battery terminals - it is like almost zero resistance to voltage

Another fun fact - steel wool embers are one of the best and fastest ways to get a camp-fire started - think of them as igniter fuel

Anyways - onto the process of the photography... Setup camera on tripod, set to either full-manual mode or aperture-priority mode, close aperture as much as possible - F8 in most cases/cameras, set ISO to 100 if you want sharp pics with lesa noise, set shutter speed to about 2 or 3 seconds, and set to delayed shutter - 2 seconds should suffice. SWITCH OFF FLASH!!

Invert bicycle and make it balance on the seat and handlebars; Stick a pad of steel wool in the rim. It is better to pour water near and around the bicycle area to wet the area so that nothing flammable catches fire due to the burning embers. Also, better you keep a fire-extinguisher ready - for those "just in case" moments

When you're sure the bicycle is steady, gently touch the battery's terminals into the steel wool -that should set the steel wool burning. Spin the wheel for a decent enough speed.

Run back to tripod/camera; in camera, half depress the shutter to allow camera to focus on the bicycle's rims, and then click. The shutter will kick in after 2 seconds (because of delayed shutter) - this ensures that there wont be camera-shake due to finger pressing the shutter.

Let camera expose for the preset time, and voila - burning rims :D

All the best - hoping to see some exposureporn from you :)

Lemme know if you need any clarifications

Edit - check out Pyro by Dennis Calvert - this dude is a fucking magician when it comes to light- painting and exposure porn!!

Edit2 - damn - my mobile texting skills sucked donkey's ass - I did some minor typo corrections and reordered the content.

Think about it - it what you thought was true, in the sea, we'd all be squashed like an ant under an elephant (considering the weight of the water in the oceans in a cylindrical tube of equivalent depth)

New idea for a system of headphone reviews on this subreddit by georgeaf99in headphones

[–]anotherDocObVious 0 points1 point ago

I feel, what is needed is a separate website ala gsmarena where you could have individual pages per product, have a set of reviews that follow a certain "makes sense" kind of format, and have different redditors add their own comments to the reviews - sort of like adding to the reviews, but with the experience of longer term ownership.

Problem with head-fi is that a "forum" kind of display format is not really convenient for viewing and comparing features of multiple products like the way either gsmarena or even Nokia's website has.

Reddit also wouldn't be a good place for this because, as it stands today, it doesn't have the kind of UI layout for a "review" mode of display. It is essentially another "forum" like head-fi.
