TROPHY CASE

A friend and I bullied a kid in 5th grade so severely his parents had him change school districts; I've been trying to find him since high school to apologize by JackTruebornin misc

[–]Zebra2 13 points14 points ago

This is probably the most sensible advice here. What is this apology supposed to accomplish other than make you feel better? Even as a grown man the guy may be best off never hearing of you again. The whole apology thing sounds kinda one-sided and unfair. Why rehash it for him if he's probably spent so much time to forget it?

I have honestly not seen a room in this subreddit that I have hated more than this one.

The chandeliers and mirror give it this very dated, stuffy feeling, while it simultaneously looks like the decor in a prefab apartment showcase. There's all sorts of impractical crap here: the mirror above the tub, the leather, and pillows? Are you kidding me? The fake plant really seals the deal on making it seem like it's trying to emulate grandma's place.

The color of the wall is horrid, and there's absolutely not sort of hue/shade contrast in the room of any sort which gives it this depressingly bland vibe.

To top it off, the way all the fixtures in the room makes a solid boundary in front of the wall gives it an unnecessarily crowded look. The 45 degree angle of the shower door doesn't help that either. The thin tile headboard of the tub also looks awkward. 1/10

The other way around

Why do things like eggs or dough become more of a solid when they are heated? by Weirdblastoisein askscience

[–]Zebra2 2 points3 points ago

When the proteins are first heating, weak intramolecular bonds are breaking. The important process here is that proteins are initially in a folded state, held together by these weak bonds. When they are heated, they unfold. At a certain temperature there will be enough energy to form chemical bonds between different proteins to make it solid.

Back then it was a crapshoot if any map even had them. You needed a chasm, but not every chasm would have them, so the only way to be sure was by trying to catch them.

These things, still to this day, are the reason I have an intuitive sense of how much a gram weighs.

I have: Trader Joe's wheat pizza dough, Trader Joe's pizza sauce, salami, black olives, and mushrooms. INSTRUCT ME! by jumpman024in Pizza

I usually just grease the pan. Dusting works also.

Pizza is best cooked hot and fast. Chances are that as hot as you can go still isn't as hot as ideal.

Ive been using upside-down duct tape for the same kind of thing in my house. The neighborhood has little roaches, so no matter what there's always some roaches around. Putting the tape down in roach traffic areas has been very effective in limiting their numbers. Each strip is a little roachocaust.

TIL crystal meth is structurally almost identical to Vick's vapour inhaler. by stqpdbin todayilearned

[–]Zebra2 1 point2 points ago

The case of a chemical with a slightly different structure acting in a completely different way is extremely rare

I would say this is very untrue with regards to biological effects and chirality. For many chiral drugs and biologically active compounds, switching a chiral center will render the compound biologically inactive. Considering how prevalent homochirality is in biology, it's no surprise that taking a mirror image of a simple molecule can make a huge difference.

So I've been told: the most effective way to write a grant proposal is the first approach you mention. After all, how are you supposed to sell someone on an idea that consists of "we'll look at this system which could yield results that might be important"? To get funding you want to tell them what you'll find and how it will be important; it's a much stronger appeal. The difference is that once you get the funding, you need to loosen up and take on the second approach to do real science. The issue is that some groups either can't differentiate the two or sell themselves too hard.
