Awesome solar eclipse shadows by dchambzin space

[–]VictoryAtNight 14 points15 points ago

First, Imagine light from an object passing through a tiny hole in a screen beside it onto an otherwise dark vertical surface on the other side of the screen. The light from the top of the object that reaches the hole is angling downwards from its source to enter the pinhole and will hit the surface on the other side of the hole lower than light from the bottom of the object, which must travel at more of an upwards angle to pass through the hole in the screen and reach a point higher on the other side. If you had a tree as your object, it might work something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pinhole-camera.svg

Now, Light from the sun passing through a small hole can cast an image of itself to. The image of the sun is, usually, just a circle of light. In this image, the sun is the object and the leaves of the tree, by blocking most of the sunlight from reaching the ground and casting a shadow, but having some narrow pathways through the leaves through which sunlight can shine directly to the ground, acts as that screen with a small hole in it.

Look at the shadow cast by a tree when the leaves are blocking most of the light but there are some spots where the sunlight makes it through, and you'll see clusters of circles. When the sun is partly eclipsed as in this photograph, the images formed in the ground changes to mirror the crescent shape of the light source.

I'm nitpicking, but the G in the denominator shouldn't be squared. 4π2 * (1 AU)3 / (G * (1 sidereal year)2 ) is one solar mass

You never explained where the 4π2 came from.

Doesn't matter. You can derive straight from Newton's laws of motion and gravity as well as the definition of an AU and a sidereal year that 4π2 * (1 AU)3 / (G * (1 sidereal year)2 ) is one solar mass.

Now you're the one attacking a straw man. The suggestion of the OP and those commenting on this post in support of OP is not that people on Facebook are dumb for just arguing that the liking of a post on Facebook will directly cause Kony to be arrested. Although the message a little bit abbreviated to fit the image macro format, the point is that it the Kony 2012 campaign, including the spreading of posts of Facebook, may not accomplish anything. (One could easily argue that western countries are not in a position to get directly involved in this complex issue, etc.) The liking of a status on Facebook perhaps does nothing at all to contribute to somebody eventually arresting Kony. Viewed in this cynical light, the viral spread of Kony 2012 appears to OP and others as a pointless fad that indulges people in a sense of contributing to solving issues while actually accomplishing nothing, and perhaps even a waste of people's attention which perhaps could be better directed to solving other issues.

some questions before I buy (fleet management, type of strategy) by lawrencelearningin AIwar

  • The AIs you are playing against have an AI Alert value, which you can see, that increases every time something particularly interesting happens (usually when you destroy something major). The main effect of this number getting higher is that the AIs will send larger waves of ships to attack you. There isn't any single point where surviving and winning suddenly becomes impossible, but basically the most important dynamic of long-term strategy in the game is evaluating how much resources are worth to you and whether they are worth the increase in AI Alert in order to capture and secure. At moderate and high difficulty levels, games can become unwinable if you destroy everything you can without prejudice, at which point you realize that what you did was dumb, and try again (in a new game, probably).

  • You can save any time, create as many saves as you want, and then go back at any time. Experimenting is easy. In my experience, it has been somewhat common to send my main fleet into enemy systems to see if it can kill something, fail and get driven back with heavy losses, and then going back to my save file to try something different.

  • Throughout the game, science labs produce knowledge, but a science lab can only gain a certain amount of knowledge from a system, so knowledge becomes a very limited resource. You then use the knowledge points to unlock various things, most of which are simply the capability to build new and better ships and structures. There are so many different things you can unlock and in the end so little knowledge that you cannot do anything remotely close to unlocking every possible thing within a game. The ships and structures you choose greatly affect the way you can fight your battles, especially at higher difficulty levels and in games with fancier ship types around.

Sorry nobody responded until the sale had ended. It is a great game, though, so if you enjoy RTS-like games, I'd still consider picking it up.

You're right in that Hakonan is stating a causation. However, there is no actual mistake here, although the statement may seem misleading. Wearing seat belts actually causes an individual's chances of getting cancer within their lifetime to increase. Not wearing seatbelts causes an indvidual's chances of getting cancer to decrease. The causation is hardly direct, but it is causation, as one affects the chances of the other, and the correlation is not caused simply through outside variables which increase one along with the other.

You are correct in the technical sense used by most of physics. However, in discussing air and fluid flows, especially informally, referring to a low pressure as pulling on an object is often a useful abbreviation for referring to a pressure in one area as being significantly lower than the surroundings in such a way as to reduce the amount of pressure on the side towards that low-pressure area, causing a net forces towards that area. For those who care more about the details of how it works, it is commonly understood that any "sucking" force is acting in this manner. It is not a real force in the strict sense, but it is an apparent force that is easily usable to describe and model what's happening.

Actually, there's one problem with this: one could theoretically still do screen-looking by tilting their head so they can get a peek at the other person's image. Of course, you would have to tilt your head a full 90 degrees to get a clear image of what the other person is doing, but still...

Oh, I wasn't arguing against you or anything. I just googled "active shutter" to find out what you meant and discovered that these shutter glasses don't actually work the way those polarized 3D glasses like in movie theaters work. I was just leaving the link in case anybody else was confused/interested.

Based on how the light polarization thing works, couldn't you still screen look by quickly tilting your head sideways so you get a peek at the other player's view?

TIL Sir Ian McKellen rips out the bible passage claiming homosexuality is a sin in every hotelroom he visits. by wadduiupoin todayilearned

I'm sure we can agree that this is technically vandalism. Vandalism definitely is justified at times, but what is the justfication here? Ripping out a page does not seem to accomplish much.

On another note, I wouldn't blame the text of the bible and wish for a new edition of the bible to simply omit this verse. There are plenty of other statements in Leviticus which are completely ridiculous in virtually any modern society, and modern Christians are perfectly happy to ignore them. The bible is a very important and relatively well-preserved document in human history, which I don't think needs to be revised now simply for political reasons.

Right, but as zokier pointed out, the slide does not begin to move backwards until after the bullet has ignited and left the barrel. The gun has a locked-breech mechanism, in which the slide is prevented from moving backwards until the pressure of the exhaust gases has already dropped a significant amount, as cantsentenceproperly indicated.

An apostrophe together with the letter 's' forms the possessive form of a noun, describing the following noun (outstanding qualifications) as belonging to or associated with the former (the company).

"Companies" is the plural form of "company", meaning "companies" would refer to a group of more than one company.

Actually, they just have a weight of some sort inside near the top of the tires that makes the whole tire want to roll to the right. It is initially balanced, but once the tire is tipped to the right, the weight causes it to roll half a turn until the weight is now sitting at the bottom of the tire.

I think what Daniel_SJ is getting at is that, in that time period, Brittain had the world's greatest empire and merchant marine, and if you were doing international business, you were likely dealing in pounds. And New England was definitely deeply tied to trans-Atlantic trade.
