The custom maps thing is really one of the biggest things they should focus on to improve the community, seriously. Let me give you an example: Team Fortress 2 has a great map editor, players can use the same tools as Valve does when building a map. Some people are really good at this, and some custom maps are better than the original ones.

Normal maps aren't very interesting since you will play FoC most of the time, but let's talk about fun maps. TF2 features a lot of fun maps (like "Best in Class") which are great to play once in a while. Winning a game on a fun-map is far less important, and I think there will be some creative people who will create the most amazing custom maps which will feature an entire different gameplay. My idea is a map where 2 teams have to fight of different hordes of neutrals like some type of Gladiator idea.

For now, I think it would be a very good idea to show the commmunity what you are working on and when you plan to release new features.
