My cousin just posted this rant tonight before she went to bed. Any succinct suggestions I can write to get her back and motivated? by MightyMinneapolisin GetMotivated

I want to tread lightly here and offer help, but I read that and it came off as downright lazy and a bit sexist.

The Great Gatsby - Official Trailer by Pigs_On_The_Wingin videos

I really dislike Baz Lurhman, so my interest in this adaptation could be classified as tepid at best. That trailer certainly did it no favors.

And Tobey Maguire....really? That's who you settled on?

You know how trailers are supposed to make you want to see the movie? Yea, no. I'll wait and netflix it....maybe.

Then how would you have said it?

What do you want: "Internet good; Lamar bad"?

Why does the Twins front office treat Anthony Slama like the plague? Does anyone have any insight, here? by thewalrusispaulin minnesotatwins

A theory: based on a cursory look on his twitter account, it appears that he has not only a personality, but is smart....something that doesn't blend well with the "stiffs and yes men" with the big club right now.

Slama doing AGAIN at aaa what he did last year, yet all he got was a couple cups of coffee and a super short leash last year.

I think a better question is why does the team have so little faith in Slama, yet continue to give Burnett an infinitely long leash?

Gray and Burton are finally coming back down to their career averages, Maloney already pitched himself to aaa, yet there is Slama, just getting out after out and still being ignored.

The worst helicopter parent I've seen was at an interview. She followed her son to the interview, and after the interview, demanded that they talk to her for a while.

Are you freakin kidding me?? That kid doesnt have a chance in life. And may I ask why you allowed the mother to sit in the interview in the first place? I would've kindly asked her to wait outside.

You hit the nail on the head on something that I think is the key component for the parents, the inability to allow their kids to experience failure. I don't know about you tiger, but I'm 33 and I was proud to have parents that guided me, but were also there for me when I fell, and more importantly, allowed me to fall. That must be hard for a parent to do, but it is imperative for the kid's emotional and personal development.

I see you used the current "buzzword" right now, helicopter parent, for these people. It is sad to me that this trend only seems to be increasing. Right now we have adults having kids that were the first generation to be helicoptered themselves and the results are frightening (I have a friend that teaches kindergarten, and she could tell some stories too).

You have AD's who have had their jobs for 10, 20+ yrs and this is their first time experiencing this level of parental involvement. It's time they help out the coaches and weed out the legitimate concerns, with the whiny parents that are mad that suzy isn't on the a-team despite the fact that the $750 summer camp coach that suzy played for said she was ready.

The problem arises though, which teenage kid is going to stand up to their parents about that? Deep down, I bet more than a few enjoy having their parents in their corner, "fighting" for them.

A kid will stand up to his/her folks about chores, homework, curfew, but I bet less than 1/2 those kids would ask them to stop doing what they are doing with respect to sports.

As a high school coach myself, the level of scrutiny from the parents goes all the way down to the JV, Fresh levels as well. They're (the parents) insane!

Our best girl on our basketball team had an overbearing father like the mom you just cited.

He'd sit within a couple rows of the bench (often shouting instructions to his daughter over the voice of the coach) and she'd look at him more during TO's than the head coach (which obviously pissed myself and the head coach a good deal).

Want to know when she played her best game that season? Yup, you guessed it, it was the one game that he didn't attend. o_O Coincidence? Nope.

These parents are ruining amateur sports, and the spineless AD's who are too chicken shit to stand up to them only enable this to continue.

I coached baseball and girls basketball, but it all still applies.

In fact, a freakin JV parent pretty much lead to the head girls bball coaching being ousted from her job.

Parents trying to relive their own dreams of failed glory through their kids are a joke.

Baseball Scoring ProTip: Buy the $2 card at the park for the souvenir factor, but do the actual scoring on this one (I prefer the diamond). This card was made for extra inn. games like that one!

Twins to DFA Marquis... by imperialMNin minnesotatwins

In fairness, it was only 3M.

I think you'd have a better argument if you complained that Ryan choose Marquis over guys like Lowe, Capuano, etc.

Who You Miss Drafting During A Decade of Dominance by mherman39in minnesotatwins

[–]MightyMinneapolis 0 points1 point ago

I see you point, and I wish it were that easy, but it's not...

In addition to the draft, you have to make smart personnel decisions involving FA's, potential trades of existing players, etc. Something that Smith whiffed on big time the last 4 years that, more than anything, has set the team back to the point it is in today.

On the flip side, I could go back and look at the drafts and find plenty of top level players that were drafted at the back end of the first round and later. The Twins simply didnt "hit" on the ones they selected. And whose fault is that? Smith? Scouting department?

Saying the Twins are bad today because they drafted in the lower third is too easy of a cop out and only about a 1/4 of the reasons as to why they are who they are now.
