Are static mockups offline web pages? by redelman431in web_design

[–]J-Ro 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, this sounds right -- or, perhaps, an HTML/CSS version of the page without the "dynamic" database part hooked up.

Either way, I think they mean proof-of-design-concept, basically.

Don't Hate Twitter Bootstrap by bishop1847in webdev

[–]J-Ro 0 points1 point ago

No worries, I think it's an interesting discussion. I'm more of a front end person myself, but I can see how you could apply the same arguments to things like Django. Maybe I'm out of my depth here, but it does seem to me like Twitter Bootstrap is a more blunt instrument with respect to front-end design than Django or Rails is to backend design, however.

Another point -- I think things like Twitter Bootstrap have their places, chiefly as the name implies. If you're bootstrapping a project, doing a hackathon, making a proof-of-concept, Bootstrap seems appropriate. But for code you're shipping, for projects that are meant to actually be used by real users, you're doing yourself a disservice by using Bootstrap as opposed to even starting with a lighter framework (say, a CSS grid) but also putting thought into how a user will work with what you've built.

Sure, this is probably true. I guess I feel that a dev that doesn't take the time to think through design -- I'm not saying you have to be an artist, but just have to care enough to think about how a user will use your work -- isn't so much a lazy dev as a bad dev.

I think this article misses the point -- at least my point as to why Twitter Bootstrap isn't a good tool.

To me, Twitter Bootstrap encourages developers who don't want to think about front-end design to believe that this point of view is acceptable. It's not. Every app doesn't need to be its own unique CSS, but developers should realize you can't separate design from usability, user experience, and ultimately core functionality of your app.

Therein lies the issue -- design is functionality. Functionality is design. And using Twitter Bootstrap obscures that and makes it "ok" to graft on design to your app after you've finished the functionality, when really, you shouldn't be building functionality without building design at the same time.

The result isn't a web where everything looks like Twitter, it's a web where developers have shoehorned their own unique apps with unique functionality into the big user interface buckets Twitter Bootstrap gives you, instead of using the more fine-grained tools of CSS, HTML, and javascript to create functionality/design that works best.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but can you use page jumps in an email? by lurker_becomes_lurkdin webdev

I think so, yes, though I'd imagine implementation depends on the email reader.

Google Groups, when they send daily digest emails, for instance, uses named anchors.

Hey guys. Any web hosting that you recommend? by bleudchanelin webdev

[–]J-Ro 0 points1 point ago

$40 a year is good, depending on reliability. For really low traffic sites, I've used iPower in the past (~$7/month). For larger sites, I generally go with Media Temple shared hosting (~$20/month).

Twitter Bootstrap 2 is out and it is awesome! by mtxin web_design

[–]J-Ro 2 points3 points ago*

Mark me down as not liking the bootstrap model. For bootstrapped projects (ie. projects that are public, but not necessarily enterprise-class) I guess saving time on front end coding makes sense. But for anything beyond a hack-a-thon type situation, I think code like this hurts more than it helps.

Design, front end coding, HTML, CSS, and javascript should follow the function of your application or website, which is as unique as your core functionality and content (ie. very). Shoving your unique ideas into broad design buckets, as tools like this ask you to do, hampers your design, and then ultimately your functionality. It's hard to present information in its optimal way using blunt tools like this.

Use tools like this a bit, and your designs may make less sense. Use them a lot, and you'll forget how to design well in the first place. Also, then every website looks the same, and like twitter, and who wants that?

My advice is if you're making websites, write your own front end. A standard toolset can help, but tools like this take that idea too far. In the end, it will hamper what you're trying to accomplish with your design.

My two cents...

Haven't dug deep, but Firebug brings up two console errors:

Modernizr is not defined [Break On This Error] Modernizr.load({ /scora.../final/ (line 124)

uncaught exception: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: [@rel*=lightbox]

My guess is your problems are related to those.
