Bioshock's Would You Kindly twist blew me away. The atmosphere really led up to that point, and everything made sense and shocked me at the same time.

Couldn't agree more. That was the one of the greatest plot twists in a video game yet. My feelings toward a character have never been changed more rapidly and more intense. I hated Andrew Ryan and his arrogance but when he relentlessly tried to talk sense into me while i was bludgering him over the head with his own cane I felt deep admiration. He never even fought back...

[–]Methedras 1 point2 points ago

It was a putter. Not a cane. I do agree wholeheartedly though. Amazing.

When the plane crash happened, I didnt pick up my controller, because the water looked so good at the time I thought it must be a cutscene.

[–]Miskatonic_Prof 2 points3 points ago

Exact same thing happened to me. I must have stared at that screen for a good 10 - 15 seconds before I figured out nothing was gonna happen unless I started playing.

Fighting a Big Daddy for the first time on the Hard difficulty, everything up untill then was a bit of a cakewalk. Apart from the first time you pick up the Shotgun and all the lights die.

I died so many times trying to kill that bastard.

[–]thefezhat 1 point2 points ago

Definitely. I was shocked at how well everything fell into place, and yet it was subtle enough that you never would have noticed it until the reveal.

I think that one boss fight might have more Easter eggs involved with it than most entire games. Did you know that you can find his parrot following you in a tree, tranquilize it, and then release it, and it will fly over and start circling him while squawking loudly, making it easier to find him using the directional microphone?

The moment i played Halo: Combat evolved and was so pleased after the first mission... but THEN, your exit pod crashes towards a mysterious ring and you your controller goes crazy with the rumble pack which was incredible then IMAPCT! I expected to enter an odd alien technological environment but was stunned with the beautiful graphics and scenery when i began my favourite mission of all time. Halo. That is probably my favourite moment in any video game. Starting off with my favourite weapon the over-powered pistol and taking out the oblivious covenant. That and the beginning of truth and reconciliation where you had to stealthily take out enemies with your sniper rifle in what was an incredibly well put together level. That was the day i fell in love with Bungie and today i will still gladly, blindly buy their shit because i owe them for those moments.

I never got the Mexico music because I called my own horse instead of riding the horse it gives you. The first time I heard the music was later in the game, when riding back to the ranch to be reunited with John's family. I'm almost glad this happened, because that's a much more powerful moment on its own, so having that being the first time I heard that music made it incredible. I didn't save and just rode straight back to the ranch because I didn't want to mess up the atmosphere.

I do think it's impressive how they managed to create what many people consider one of the most memorable gaming moments of all time primarily through music. The power of an amazing soundtrack in a video game seems underrated sometimes.

G-Man in Half Life. When I played through the second one and he comes out at the end during the explosion in the Citadel. I have never been that terrified of a video game character ever. Everything from the way he talks, to how he just comes out of the explosion.

Pretty much everything about the Half Life series. I couldn't believe some of the things they made Freeman do. But one of the cool things that I always laugh about is when Dr. Breen is yelling at the Combine soldiers in the prison about how Freeman is a theoretical physicist, not some former government operative.

Taking down my first building in Bad Company 2. I honestly just stopped fighting and sat and watched the thing come down.

In Assassin's Creed 2 when you first really realize that Altair is the one who wrote the Codex pages. Not to mention the brutal assassinations Ezio is capable of.

Bioshock. Everything about it. Especially when you first float down into Rapture. I've never seen anything like that.

Fallout 3. The first time I saw downtown D.C. I live on the east coast, so that really struck home.

And I almost forgot when I realized that Half Life and Portal take place in the same universe. I can't wait for Freeman to get a Portal gun.

I think the problem most people had with it was that it was too similar to OoT. The Wolf mechanic was cool but didn't add nearly as much to the game as most Zelda games' main mechanics do, the setting was very similar - it just didn't feel like there was anything new to it.

Personally, I still love it, and think that if you ignore the times they came out and just take the games on their own Twilight Princess is better than OoT in many ways, but it seems a lot of people weren't able to get past the feeling of OoT deja vu.

[–]amanojaku 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agree 100%. It was too similar. Though i still put OoT as a lot further ahead than any other Zelda game. It was almost perfect.

The first time you reach the surface in Half-Life. Never before was I so relieved to have finally escaped in a video game. Then I saw the soldiers and thought "cool, these guys are totally gonna help me and together we'll kill all the aliens and live happily ever after". Turns out they didn't want to help me they just wanted to make the situation go away along with me and anybody else in Black Mesa. So I was forced back underground and I raged hard. I covered the walls with their blood.

Pretty much every boss fight in Shadow of the Colossus is a "holy shit" moment of awesomeness.

In Final Fantasy 10 when you find out Auron has been dead the whole time and Jecht is Sin.

In Chrono Trigger when you realize the kid you met in the sky city is Magus

In Chrono Cross when you see the bell from Leene Square towards the end of the game

The psychological terror you experience from Silent Hill 2. Truly a masterpiece of horror and good storytelling.

When I first left the sewers in Oblivion. The whole environment really blew me away along with the perfect soundtrack. I was about to embark on a great journey.

When flying mounts were introduced in Burning Crusade.

The Ice Valley in Metroid Prime. That's when I fell in love with that game

•Resident Evil 4: The game was mind blowing from the beginning, but that scene where you try to hold out in the cabin with Luis was amazing. Frantic, tense, and very well done. Haven't felt that in another shooter since.

•Gears of War 2: The scene where Dom and Marcus find Maria and what transpires. The Gears story doesn't get enough credit; that scene, I mean holy shit

•Indigo Prophecy: The very first gameplay moment. After the intro finishes and you're in the bathroom standing over the person you've just murdered while the police are coming with the game basically saying "alright, you take it from here." I was scrambling to make a clean getaway.

•Duke Nukem Forever: Coming to the realization that I must be the only person in the world that thought this was a great game; campaign, multiplayer and all.

Haven't felt that in another shooter since

That's because RE4 wasn't a shooter. Sure it was a game where you shot people, but it wasn't a game ABOUT shooting people. It was a game about staying alive, resource management and atmosphere.

Unfortunately with RE5 they threw most of that out the window and really did make a game about shooting people...

Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit)

Bioshock: Would you kindly? twist Blew my mind.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: Finding Malik on the aug-harvesting operation table with her head cut open in the final scenes Not exactly on the beaten path, but holy shit.

Metal Gear Solid: Remember me Snake? Master Miller, this whole time, has been Liquid Snake

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sup Patriots? Fuck your shit, I'm Ocelot! Ocelot has been pulling the strings THE WHOLE TIME

Metal Gear Solid 3: Being forced to 'die' in The Sorrow's little cut-scene.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: Finding the secret room belonging to the Asylum Director, promoting the second game.

Borderlands: Fighting Crawmerax for the first time, fighting the Eridians for the first time.

Portal 2: White Goo (I can put my portal on anything?)and the relevation of who GLaDOS really is, and her relation to Chell

Assassin's Creed (all of them): EVERYTHING EVER

The AC-130 scene did it for me. At first I was happy about the ordnance, but after a few days it kept coming back to me, the alien nature of the scopes you use, the fact that you had to avoid destroying the church (but could kill basically anyone running from it). It wasn't "fun" to sit around thinking about it, but I'm glad that a game like cod can still make me think like that.

(I want to go replay it, but after my Live account got hacked to the tune of $100, Microsoft support told me they wouldn't recover the account or refund me. This is what I get for not using my real name when I sign up, I guess.)

EDIT: I went back to youtube to find footage of that section, and found what seems to be almost direct inspiration for the game. I guess this was probably posted on reddit back near release date, but this--to me--is a great example of why games shouldn't dumb down violence and the consequences of using violence. It allows people to draw their own conclusions on whether or not they're doing the right thing.

The end of Halo Reach. You knew what was coming, but after all that happened to the people through the campaign you were like, fuck it, let's kill em all. That was one of the most engaging/sad moments in any FPS games for me, and I wasn't expecting it in a Halo game since so many people bash it for being superficial. I hope I didn't say anything that needs to be blacked out. Felt too lazy to use the spoiler alert, so I just avoided saying exactly what happened. Regardless, Halo Reach was fucking great.

I'd hardly say Halo Reach was superficial. The ending of reach was just such a brilliant climax, it was desperate and you HAD to get it done to basically set off a chain of events that would save the galaxy and the final lone wolf mission was completely unexpected, the best part was how your visorcracked as you took damage, damn that was so cool.

I highly doubt anyone remembers this, but in CoD 1, you begin basic training with a bunch of generic soldiers and one who's slightly less generic looking (who's name I can't recall). As you continue playing the game, this soldier participates in every battle as an American, but towards the end of the American campaign, he gets killed in/near some trenches.

Up to this point, I figured he was just another invulnerable NPC and rolled with it, but when he was shot right in front of me, I sorta had an oh shit moment.

Modern Warfare 2 - you are the conscious perpetrator of a civillian massacre. The tense music that plays in the background is just icing on the cake.

I also liked how the game went out of its way to showcase one of your AI teammates being the ultimate bad-ass, only to show him getting unceremoniously murdered in a betrayal. Again, the music makes this scene.

The missile launch in CoD4. That was a pretty major "oh SHIT" moment, especially during the cutscene where it shows the projected casualties numbering in the tens of millions.

The reveal of Rapture at the start of Bioshock. I was awestruck by the beauty of it all. Also the plot twist midway through the game, it just came together so well and surprised me big time while making a lot of sense.

The crane jump in Mirror's Edge. Merc's reaction cemented the holy shit factor.

Putting a portal on the moon. "Did I just... no way."

Edit: After playing a little more DX:HR, I feel the need to add that I was totally shocked when I found out that Megan wasn't dead. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

The part where you return to Shadow Moses Island and the epic MGS1 music starts playing and as you run around, Snake starts having flashbacks from the time he first visited it.

Also, not so much as a "Holy Shit!" moment in where it blew me away per-se, but more kinda ran me down into a tearful baby was also in Metal Gear Solid 4. At the end of the game when you see Snake in the cemetery and the camera pans up to the sky and you hear a gunshot, then it goes back to the Meryl and Jonny's Wedding and Sonny asks Hal "when is Uncle Snake coming back?" and Hal replies "Snakes... very sick, and he has to get better.." That just broke me right the fuck down for like 10 minutes straight.

I'm sure this has been said before, but the entirety of Half Life 2. I never played the first Half Life. So I popped in number 2 and started playing.

What got me was how there were no cutscenes. Everything was fluid and segued into the next scene. I WAS Gordon Freeman. And by the end of it, it felt like I had just finished a really long day.

Also:

The iconic beginning to Bioshock. The sound of the plane going downwards. Looking up from the water at the amazing tower, moonlit. Going inside. Sinking underwater with Ryan's speech.

In Left 4 Dead, standing in a subway car with a tank somewhere outside. Then running like hell.

When I got the Portal gun in Darksiders. I thought... "I can't believe they did that". Then I thought "These people are awesome"

In fact also when I first got to the Twilight Cathedral in Darksiders. The game instantly went from "average DMC-clone" to "amazing modern-day Zelda but with decent combat"

Just Cause 2 when I first stood atop an enormous mountain, jumped on top of a flying jet, then hijacked it, flew it to an enemy base, flew it straight into the ground killing several guards, jumping out just before it exploded, then pulled myself around whilst parachuting, killing guards left and right.

And this isn't a good one, but Splinter Cell Conviction, when I realised that it wasn't even a Splinter Cell game, it was some weird action thing, and I realised I'd never been more disappointed in my entire life
