Soothes the stomach and livens the senses!

[–]NickiTikkiTavi[S] 5 points6 points ago

I have never heard of this! As a proud and prolific drinker, I certainly will try it at least twice. Thank you!

[–]SpaceshipEarthGold Coast 10 points11 points ago

Don't promise twice.

Get a Polish or a Pork Chop Sandwich from Maxwell Street (http://www.jimsoriginal.com/jimsoriginal/Welcome.html). But be warned, don't eat it in your car, that smell will linger for days. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's a good or bad thing.

Here's my completely unorganized and incomplete list of fun things to do in Chicago (I'm leaving out all the bad stuff, like parking tickets, watching a homeless man poop on the el, etc): Eat at Hot Doug's. See a movie at the Music Box. Check out some Chicago International Film Fest movies. Get out on a boat and see the skyline from the water. Wander through Quimby's & Myopic Books. Participate in a Critical Mass ride. Eat a falafel at Sultan's Market. Take advantage of all the free, outdoor music in the summer. Get some sweets from Sweet Mandy B's. Experience chicken like never before at El Pollo Express. Try the gelato at Black Dog Gelato. Catch a show at Empty Bottle. See an exhibit at the MCA. Kayak down the Chicago River. Check out Soup & Bread or the Interview Show at the Hideout. See Too Much Light.

I love this, especially the Too Much Light shoutout.

[–]stumbledown8 1 point2 points ago

I LOVE Black Dog and sweet Mandy B's.

Experience bike riders who do not obey any traffic laws...ever...the bitch and complain when someone hits them...

[–]viola3458Buena Park 14 points15 points ago

-Develop a pizza opinion (ie, where is the best deep dish in the city), and then be able to tell someone who doesn't like your chosen place why they are so fucking wrong. This is quite possibly the best argument you can have.

-I think you have to go the wrigleyville barleycorn at least once just to see how horrible it is.

-Second city/IO/any improv

  • Get your car towed at least once and have to experience the clusterfuck that is trying to get it out.

  • Order a chocolate shake at the Weiner's Circle

  • Go see a christmas carol at the goodman

  • Go to anything at the steppenwolf

-Eat in the walnut room at macy's (sigh) over christmas. Or, if you don't want to spend money on the food, go look at the tree from the viewing gallery.

  • Harold's. Go forth and experience the magical chicken.

Fucking Lincoln Towing. They make me rage.

Have an argument with someone about the cubs vs sox. Doesnt matter what side you are on... or if you even care.

[–]SlagginOff 7 points8 points ago

Make sure you develop a high tolerance for alcohol so that you can outdrink those patsies from either coast.

[–]MiobyRogers Park 4 points5 points ago

I will be able to help you with this. Drinking!

[–]stumpdawg 12 points13 points ago

you ever put ketchup on a hotdog your fuckin out of the club!

[–]analogkid01Logan Square -3 points-2 points ago

I'm an American, a Chicagoan, and a man, and I'll put whatever the hell I want on my hot dog!

[–]tractortractor 5 points6 points ago

The terms "Chicagoan" and "whatever the hell I want on my hot dog!" negate each other.

[–]ArmsRaisedBeBrave 0 points1 point ago

I like the cut of yer jib sir ...screw this facist wiener state.

[–]analogkid01Logan Square 0 points1 point ago

Even Hot Doug agrees...if you go to his shop, "ketchup" is listed right there on the list of toppings. And if you ask for it, you get it - no questions asked, no ribbing, nothing. You get a hot dog with ketchup on it. Which is how it should be.

Have a nice chat with a homeless person.

Have a not so nice chat with a homeless person.

Make a random friend on a train/bus.

Stop being scared of rats.

Hang out at the Harold Washington Library because it is magnificent.

[–]NickiTikkiTavi[S] 1 point2 points ago

I have accomplished four out of five of these. To the Harold Washington Library I go!

[–]silverrabbit 5 points6 points ago*

Visit the Shedd, Art Institute, and the Field Museum

See the Lincoln Park Zoo Christmas lights

See a concert at the Pritzker Pavilion (they are free afterall)

Take a water taxi down to Chinatown from Downtown.

Those are just a few.

Not sure why all the downvotes? Who from Chicago hasn't gone to all the museums? If you haven't you are truly missing out. I don't know where this guy lives so I didn't give him neighborhood suggestions because "chocolate shakes" are a northside thing and being arrested by the cops is just silly.

[–]NickiTikkiTavi[S] 2 points3 points ago

I hit all the museums my first month here. Huge weather nerd so the giant tornado at MSI made my day.

[–]silverrabbit 1 point2 points ago

I haven't been to the museum of science and industry in a long time, maybe I should take my own advice. Also I'd venture into different neighborhoods for the food. Uptown as great Vietnamese food for one. Going to a cubs game is usually something people recommend as well. I'd recommend trying out the local breweries here.

[–]neeto85Lakeview -3 points-2 points ago

Probably because you listed things that might make you more of a "true tourist" than a "true Chicagoan."

[–]silverrabbit 0 points1 point ago

But they are all relevant to Chicago. Some of the things people mentioned are things that even people who have lived in Chicago all their lives haven't done. Everyone who grew up in Chicago took a field trip to the museums. LP's Zoo is free and is always crowded, there is no way you can tell me it's a tourist site. The most touristy thing I mentioned was taking the water taxi, and honestly it gave me a view of the city that I had never experienced.

Become a cubs fan and immediately start hating yourself.

Edit: I'm a cubs fan.

[–]fr0ntl1n3Bucktown 0 points1 point ago

start touring the neighborhoods- this is what makes Chicago a great city.

To be an honorary Chicagoan. You must complete and sing this number:

588-2300 ??????

To be a TRUE Chicagoan you must complete the above and also the following two tasks.

1) Name the ingredients on a Chicago Style Hot Dog.

2) Correctly label the following on a map of the Chicagoland Area:

Edens, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Stevenson, Dan Ryan, LSD, Bishop Ford, Skyway, Edens Spur, Tri-State.

At least that is my test! Good Luck!

And for Extra Credit:

I've only lived here for 3 years, and winter is kind of a rough time to really experience any of the outdoor activities Chicago has to offer (because there are a LOT). What you can do is EAT and go to the theater. Chicago has an amazing theater scene. A lot of the theaters are pretty pricey, so it's nice to try out some of the storefront theaters. A lot of them have very high quality productions. Avoid Gorilla Tango Theater, though.

Affordable Theater Venues: Chicago Dramatists Stage 773 Theater Wit Viaduct Theater Greenhouse Theater

Food:

Pizza (Yes, I have formed an opinion): Best pizza in the city is Pequod's Pizza.

Hot Dogs and Italian Beef: Go to Portillos. I have no idea if it is the best in the city, but it is downtown and it's a tacky good time. I personally think the food is great. Make sure to try the Chicago Dog!

Sushi: House of Sushi and Noodles has an all you can eat sushi, and it's affordable and fresh.

Breakfast: Go to a place called TOAST and order the French Toast Orgy. You're welcome.
